Hey everybody,

i just rented a vps with plesk 7.5 and now i am going to ask some very very stupid questions but the manual was no help at all (i admit i havent read it completely and to be honest i dont have the time... though if there is no other way i probably just have to icon_sad.gif )

thanks to the manual i was successfull in creating the domain "dummy123.com" (physical hosting) in plesk on my server "xyz"... i also was able to connect via ftp and upload a file BUT:

1. plesk creates a directory for the new domain.... where is it (like http://xyz/...)

2. why cant i delete everythung via ftp... i see some dirs in smartftp but i can not delete one of them... plus why is it that i can only upload files to /httpdocs /httpsdocs ? where can i setup that differently?

well thats all for now... and if its to much to explain just tell me where to find it in the manual.... i can imagine how stupid/ignorant i must look right now but i had everything (traffic, mysql dbs, webspace...) unlimited on a simple "webpack" up until a few weeks ago...

thanks
Yivit
1. the site would be http://www.domain.com/ and the actual location of the files would be /home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs.

2. You can only delete directories owned by the domain user. Some of the directories in the domain's "home" are owned by root and do not have world write permission (which is needed to delete). Your site contents will be in one of 3 places - httpdocs for normal traffic, httpsdocs for SSL traffic, and cgi-bin for CGI stuff.

Hope this helps.

well it doesnt really work icon_sad.gif

this proves the domain is named "checkdienudel.com": 80.237.168.138/$sitepreview/checkdienudel.com/
which means that the actual location would be this: 80.237.168.138/home/httpd/vhosts/checkdienudel.com/httpdocs

I'm confused by your question ADeffects.

The site preview seems to be working since you're getting a default page. But the name servers for the domain are pointing it over to completely different IP numbers according to DNS Report and Tracert. They're certainly not pointing to anything in the same Clacc C subnet at this point.

So when you try to go to just the domain name you're not reaching the server that is set up on the 80. IP number. You'll need to update the name servers for the domain if you want that to work.

Beyond that, the 2nd URL you put above is never going to work. You don't need to put in the /home/httpd/vhosts/ bit. That's just the file location on the server.

lol i know that i havent changed the dns settings yet (i admit i havent checked how it works yet, but i know basically what to do).... no the problem is that i will be hosting a friend who does not owe a top level domain, so he wont be able do that too. the only thing he can do is redirect to another url.... thats why i need to know how to reach it.... that checkdienudel domain was just there for demo purposes so you could eventually tell the exact path

Your question gets stranger by the moment ADeffects.

Since your friend doesn't own a domain name, simply set them up as a webuser or with a subdomain. Depending upon which you choose, tell them to point their ftp client to the appropriate location on the server to upload their files. Then give them the appropriate url to use for their "site".

I'm not sure where you're trying to go with the thing using the full file path (eg. http://123.456.789.10/home/httpd/vhosts/...) No server works like that.
