I have just realised that SSL isn't running on mybox either [although 443 shows listening in netstat], must it be enabled via whm?

I believe you can set the cert for the WHM in cPanel SSL/TLS section.

"Change cPanel/WHM Certificate"

Yeah, read the Newbie guide to cPanel. All the important URL's are listed there, with their ports.

Specifically:

WHM
- Secure SSL https://sitename.com:2087
- Regular http://sitename.com:2086

Cpanel
- Secure SSL https://sitename.com:2083
- Regular https://sitename.com:2082

Webmail
- Secure SSL https://domain.com:2096
- Regular https://domain.com:2095

If you install a certificate in cPanel be sure to read this thread:
