Guys - we have a game server with the Planet & going through the Global Crossing network has been lag city - at least the last week or so for some of us.

Took a tracert below - but stop #11 is going between the no lag ~ 60 or so (my Qwest network is very steady up to #9) - all the way up to 2000 ms (700 this eve...) or so. Stop # 12 is not as bad - but it's jumping between 60 and 200 also.

___________

Has been creating quite a few "what the" moments for a lot of this and wonder if there is a problem with their network right before getting into the Planet network.

Thanks ahead for any help...

Garrett2112,

In your traceroute I see what you are talking about on hop 11:
>11 448 ms 84 ms 66 ms te7-1-10G.ar2.DAL2.gblx.net [67.16.129.117]

But do not see this in any other hops. Time cannot go backwards and if it took 400+ ms to get through the router then you would see that carry on past that hop especially since you have 14 more packets that didn't see that latency (2 remaining on hop 11 and 12 for the remaining hops).

The data you want to look at is end to end latency/loss. Increased latency in the middle of the traceroute may simply be a router de-prioritizing it's 'TTL expired' message back to your source as routing packets from one interface to another is it's utmost priority. Try running a 100 count ping to your server from your source to get an average.

You'll probably want to do a trace from your server back to your source to see if that illustrates a possible problem along the return path since it's most likely asymmetrical to the inbound path.

All this is not to say that Global Crossing does not have a problem, just that the information provided is inconclusive.

If there is a problem with Global Crossing then we can work with them to troubleshoot and repair it.

You can update this thread with the information if you wish or you can open a ticket and provide all this information for a quicker response and to keep the information private. If we need to contact Global Crossing then we'll need to have a ticket open on this.

We are in the UK and have had constant problems with TP download speed to the uk over the past 18 months, as well as generally slow response when working within RDP.

TP Dallas is slower than TP Houston, but both degrade to about 200-250kbytes/second during a long download. I'm already in a long discussion with the TP NOC on this via a ticket.

We've done extensive tests by the way. speedtest.net gives us 500 k/s and so do some other dallas companies, TP often blames our ISP but we get the same (usually worse) issue when we ask others in the UK to download a file from our TP dallas server.

Having gone through several support tickets over the past 18 months, I cannot see how this will ever be resolved. Anyone in the UK renting a server in the US should look carefully at the download speeds of the specific provider.

I'm in the UK and have no such problems. Been with EV1/TP for many years. Is it related to your ISP? Who is it?

I know of a couple of other forums users around here who are from the UK and not heard of them reporting issues.

Speed to the UK should have improved significantly recently, as we added the location in London with a private 10Gbps line back to our Virginia point of presence which makes for much faster TransAtlantic transfer. If you can run some traces and include them in a new ticket, PM me with the info and I'll follow up to make sure someone on our Networking team takes a look for you.
