 Custom nameservers... is it worth the effort? |

Just that.
Do you believe that is worth the effort to create your own nameservers? Is there any advantage versus having the managed by orbit panel? Thanks in advance, Simon. |

Yes there is.
You have control over the DNS name server. This gives you all the features of whatever DNS server you are using instead of depending on a 3rd party control panel. However, you need to understand what it takes to run a DNS name server and you need to know how it works so if there was ever an issue, you would have an understanding as how to fix it. If you are a web host, this gives your in-house control panel direct access to records. Not all control panels work well if the DNS server is somewhere else that you have no control over. *EDIT: Let me make a quick note that I have not used Orbit to manage DNS so I don't have a complete comparison. |

The biggest thing off hand is having it done automatically if you have any of the popular control panels. Another really nice thing is that the changes are instant. I forget off hand how long it takes for Orbit but it is generally a few hours between DNS updates.

Thanks for the answers  .I donīt have any control panel other than webmin... thatīs my problem. I will have to expend some hours reading about it but, I think I will give it a chance. Ok,
I have setup my first master zone dns through webmin, and registered my first 2 nameservers on my registrar (ns1 and ns2). Just a question. The master zone corresponds to a domain, example.org. What if I want to use that nameservers to resolve another domains? For example, the idea is to have my custom nameservers (2) to resolve all the domains of my company. How can that be done? I just add more records to the master zone, or create other zones? Thanks in advance, Simon! |
