Hi there, after weeks of looking around for a good reliable host ive come to the conclusion that i want hosting with The Planet.

The problem perhaps is that im pretty much totally new to hosting etc. I want to host a wordpress blog/portfolio/forum, for which ill need PHP 4.2 or greater, MySQL 4.0 or greater and the mod_rewrite Apache module. After spending a lot of time reading about your different hosting packages and what they offer me i feel im a bit lost and was hoping you'd be able to clear some things up for me.
I obviously dont need a dedicated server (yet icon_razz.gif) so i asume that im looking at managed web hosting. Now is this effectivly the same as what i call "normal" hosting packages other webhosts offer e.g. "x" amount of webspace, "x" amount of bandwidth + all the bells and whistles for "x" amount per month?

If so then what kind of prices am i looking at for that kind of setup? If im reading correctly you can tailer your packages around my needs so would you recommend in terms of bandwidth/webspace etc id be needing and is it easy to upgrade if this becomes a limiting factor once i grow my site?

I hope this all makes sense, im basically just trying to find out if you offer "general" hosting packages and not just larger packages built more for business. I know i could go and buy some hosting with another company offering me stupid amounts of disk space and bandwidth but i really am looking for something that has good reliable technical support and stability to back it up. Basically i want the best of the best, and i hope im in the right place icon_mrgreen.gif

The Planet sells dedicated servers so that you can do web hosting, database hosting, email, gaming...etc

What you want sounds like a hosting plan. There are hundreds, and hundreds of companies out there who offers services like that.

Unless this site is going to be high traffic, high load, and high bandwidth you may not need a dedicated server and would probably be okay with getting a hosting package from a Hosting Provider.

If I am totally off my rocker fill the details, and point us in the correct direction, because to me it appears you are confused.

I understand what dedicated servers offer and i know i definiatly dont need one yet. i was simply not sure if "managed hosting" that TP offers was similar to a hosting package from a hosting provider or if they are totaly different and if so in what way.
At the moment im just trying to get my head around all the infomation before i jump in at the deep end. For example i was looking at packages from places like DreamHost but ive read that a lot of people have endless stability problems with them and i dont want all that hassle, just something stable and reliable with the ability to easily upgrade/expand when i need.

Managed hosting here at TP is when they manage a dedicated server that you lease from them.

The Planet isn't in the Webhosting Provider business, they provide servers for Webhosting Providers.

You mentioned Dreamhost, and they are a webhosting provider. Markcausa, here on the forums runs his own company, just like amny others that frequent the forum.

I would like to refer you to www.webhostingtalk.com where there is an industry forum all about this sort of things. Asking your question there will help because you will be drawing from a much larger audience.

Good luck!
