I do my DNS on a remote service (dnsmadeeasy.com).

When I log into my Cpanel/WHM equipped server, I notice that named consumes a significant amount of cpu and memory. I thought that if named is unnecessary I would disable it to conserve resources and reduce vulnerability.

However when I log into WHM I see options to manage DNS but none to disable the DNS service. Is this not recommended with Cpanel/WHM?

I assume that I can disable the named service via editing the root crontab that keeps it alive and change the resolv.conf file to point to dnsmadeeasy and turning of the named service.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hmmm. I don't know if I would turn the service off entirely. Make sure you're running the latest version of cPan because named isn't running high for me at all.

This is what I'm showing:
CODE
named      0      0.0     0.3      /usr/sbin/named -u named

Is that to high for you (no offense, just asking)?

To turn off Name sever you just go to :

Main >> Service Configuration >> Service Manager

Scroll down the list till you find named uncheck both boxes and scroll down to the bottom and click save. If you are not using the DNS server feature there is no reason to leave it running.

Hope this helps out.

Actually my runs quite hi all the time for example....

named 7445 0.9 6.2 99464 63408 ? S 2006 835:01 /usr/sbin/named -u named

I have 1G of ram

I am not running the lastest but not ancient either....

WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.9.0-R95
