On a RHE3 cpanel system, exactly what additional software is required to be installed on the server to allow disksync to work? Have there been any known security issues with the disksync software in the past 12 months?

You will need to install the Linux Server Agent on the server and on your desktop, you will need to install the DiskSync Agent Console Software.

All of which could be found in Orbit

Who exactly maintains this disksync code?

(I'm not able to view the programs you mention as I don't have a disksync account yet.)

I'm a little hesitant to install software with root-level access that I know nothing about yet...

The copyright for DiskSync is that of eVault Inc. The version used by The Planet is probably customized for used with DiskSync.

DiskSync has pretty much been working for quite some time now. So far have not heard of any security issues with DiskSync since it was launched.

I suppose that
1.) it's strictly firewalled to allow access only to/from a.) the vault at the planet and b.) the console on a specific IP so it's not attackable directly, and
2.0 it's not widely used enough to be targeted anyway very much.

It's firewalled, password-protected and encrypted as far as I know and it only is accessible from within their network.

And I assume when the root password is transmitted by the agent console software that it's just a securely encrypted as over SSH?

Greetings,

No security issues have been revealed with this product in the last 12 months. This is an Enterprise-class backup utility which has been in production since the 1980's, and the code base is directly maintained by the vendor.

DiskSync utilizes public-key encryption for over-the-wire communications, both for authentication, and for data transmission between the Agent and the Vault. This encryption can be disabled, but this is not recommended.

Service to the DiskSync Vaults are only permitted within our network. I.E. hosts on the Internet outside of our facilities cannot access the DiskSync Vaults directly.

All activities with the Vault are authenticated with an Account, Username, Password, and Hostname.
