Hello everyone!

I have been debating between SM and 1and1 for about a month now to start my own webhost and sell various voice servers as well as put my own websites and goodies and gaming servers on some servers. Well I won't be establishing a business for some months now, but I would like to purchase the server for my own stuff atleast and learn some of the stuff.

I do, however, have a few questions, which are really just nebie linux questions, but hopefully all the folks at SM with experience can ease my mind.

1) I need some experienced input about which server and options. I am looking at the SuperServer 2.8 P4 w/ HT, 1GB RAM, 200GB HD, and Plesk. Will this setup be able to sustain an Americas Army gameserver of 20 players, a TeamSpeak daemon running multiple servers with total of about 100 users, and many PHP/MySQL dependent websites?

2) What would be better for ease of use, but having less problems? Using up2date or compiling from source in RHE?

3) Is it worth $10/month extra for a 100Mbps uplink? Will it speed up connectivity to internet any more or is the extra speed pretty much just for inter-connectivity between "in-house" servers?

4) If I were to get a 2nd HD, what would be the best way to partision system? I was told to put /usr and /var on the 2nd HD as to speed up MySQL queries, and keep the gaming server off of the main HD. Would this method be good?

5) What is Private VLAN?

Thank you in advance for any and all responses. So far, i am very very happy with what I see at these forums after reading them for the past 3 days icon_razz.gif .

1) I am not sure about American Army but the general consensus would be not to host game servers and web servers on the same machine as either one would affect the performance of the other quite drastically. Game servers can be quite CPU resource hungry and could be a pain. Having a control panel on the machine would eat into some of the precious resources. If you want both, host them separately.

2) Using up2date will ensure you get (at least in theory) updates made explicitly for the underlining OS itself. You can comply from soure if you know what you are doing. I guess it is personal preference here.

3) Increasing the uplink to 100mbps means that you have a much larger pipe which would mean a faster access (provided the server can handle it). But if what you are running do not require it or hardly hit 10mbps, then it makes no difference. The best would be to keep it at 10mbps then monitor your traffic pattern, if it is consistently hitting 10mbps then it makes sense to upgrade. But understand that if it does sustain that much traffic, you will have to be prepared to pay for excess bandwidth charges.

4) Not sure about best partition system.

5) Private VLAN just allows them to assign a great number of IPs to a router beyond its physical limits without requiring you to move to a new router. It also prevents someone from hijacking your assigned IP address.

Thanks alot for your input eddy!

All I don't know about is the game server....I think it might be possible, as I run an 8 man server and websites on my home PII @ 350MHz and 128MB RAM on RHL9   with some lag on both, but that has to do with only cable connection and the pitiful Pentium II.

Do you absolutely think it is not worth doing? Or should I try and let you guys know the outcome...it has a simple uninstall script anyway if all else fails.

If you really want to get both on one box then I would go with a Dual Xeon box, that way at least each one gets thier own CPU. A few small websites probobly wouldn't bother the 2.8, but if you have a bunch of them, esp with forums that are active, or other dynamic content then you will have lag.

Please, do not go with 1and1. I had their UK service around this time last year, in my ubernoob days, and dude, they are con artists. They charged me £250 out of nowhere.

They suck, go with SM. I'd say to run all that, get a dual xeon too.

I would only have the game server on the server for a little while, for some friends of mine, and see if maybe I should get some more servers for gaming for one of my clans, and at that time, I will only have my websites on there, which are not big hits, so I doubt they would effect each other too much. Once I setup the webhosting, and start taking on clients, its definatelty outta there, and if I like it, I will purcahse several Dual Xeons for both games, and websites...but that is far in the future.

I currently host at 1and1.com. They had a free 3 year promo offer, so I took and and like it, but just need more space, and want to start this business. I checked out their server prices and liked them, but just was really really iffy about the bandwidth and support, and checked out WHT and SM just came up over and over. I am definately going to get SM, but will have to wait a little bit.

Having both game and web servers don't necessarily affect each other. You'll notice big performance drops if either of them get busy though. I hope you enjoy your service with us. icon_biggrin.gif

A VLAN is like your own area network. In theory you won't be sharing a network with anyone. It helps with performance, security and scalability say if you decide to grow. For more information you can type VLAN in on the google website and it will supply alot. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I am very happy with even the "Unofficial support" here in these forums...wonder how great the "Official support" is icon_biggrin.gif .

I am still debating between the Super Server 2.8 and the Super Xeon 2.4 as I am new, and don't exactly have the money, but think I would save by buying the dual xeon in the long run. I will be getting one of them next time I see a good deal (perhaps free Plesk or RAM orHD upgrade).

The free setup special is available on both of the servers you mention. This is a great deal because it saves you $20/mth off the server and provides ZERO setup.

Come on you know you want one icon_lol.gif

ohhhh......I knew the $0 setup...but $20/month off!

Just checking...that is for the lifetime of the server correct (the $20/month off)?

And in that case...time to get the all powerful one with the credit card!

Yes, the $20/mth off is yours to enjoy as long as you keep that server. The prices would stick too even if they were to increase the prices in the distant future.

One last question....

Should we enter my name (as it will be mine) as the contact name or my mothers name (as she is the credit card holder)?

You should probably type in your billing name and address since they need that to verify the order with the bank. So in your case, you need to have your mum details in there. Just subsequently after you got your orbit account, you could create a sub account for yourself. But all add-ons, terminations should be handle through the main account.

In short, that makes your mum as thePlanet's customer instead of you icon_wink.gif

Eddy is correct. The account will need to be under the card holders name.
