Greetings all,

I am looking for some volunteers to help me keep the ServerMatrix network the best it can be. Here's what I'm looking for:
[list]
[*]Geographic diversity (different parts of the US, World, etc)

[*]Provider diversity (people who have connections to various providers)

[*]Static IP

[*]Dedicated connection (always on)
[list]
Basically, I need to be able to monitor network performance from our network here to the rest of the world to make sure we're not seeing packet loss, high latency, etc. The tests will consist of 20 ICMP packets to whatever IP you provide me to monitor.

If you are interested in helping out, please PM or email me your IP, provider, speed of your connection, and the location of the server/IP.

I will narrow the list down once I have enough volunteers and notify you if you were accepted or not.

Once this is setup, I will try and make it public so you can see how we're performing.

Thanks!

Hey, that's an awesome idea. Anything to increase the betterment (this a word? icon_smile.gif ) of Server Matrix!

I'd help, but I actually just lowered my DSL plan to a smaller plan and without my static ip. Oh well. I do use one of those dynamic ip programs that updates it to like computer.noip.com. If that would work, I'm in.

Just an idea, why not start by pinging all of the root DNS servers? Those tend to be well connected, and I know at least a few allow ICMP. A few traceroutes ought to give you a good idea of physical location and connectivity as well.

True, but the root DNS servers will also be connected to the main pipelines thus in a sense they would not be well dispersed (think of it as driving on the highway only, while SM wants to test all the roads)

Good idea though, they should at least add them to the list icon_smile.gif

Not a bad idea - but many of the root servers are anycasted (the IP exists in multiple locations). I need to know exactly where the IP I'm testing is, and also know that the location doesn't change because of routing, etc.

I made something familiar to display real uptime to various internet exchanges around the world.
Here is the URL: http://www.kabelco.net/mrtg/ping/

For those who cares, this server is basically housed in the same building as
the norwegian internet exchange (www.nix.no) And if you want,
you could always use my server as a dummy for your project.

Connectivity is 100mbps, connected through NIX with various peering arrangements
(see http://www.uio.no/nix/nix-ops.html) mainly with GBLX/UUnet
for foreign traffic. Static ip (web.kabelco.no)

Let me know if this is interesting.

I am really happy that someone at ServerMatrix is making such a testing and evaluation project. I can only say to Mr William "If you need help from Québec, Canada,... give me a ring"

Probably you allready know "VisualRoute" but... it really helped me out confirming that ServerMatrix was (even if not perfect) the right place to move my server (some days ago) icon_wink.gif You'll have to guess from where... I won't say icon_wink.gif
(I am so happy to haved moved here)

So... I conducted a test from 6 sources (mixmatch: Europe/Asia) to "servermatrix.net" and ended up with ServerMatrix being 3 times the winner over 6 tests.

Here's the page whre are the links I used for theses tests:
http://visualware.com/personal/demo/index.html

Regards,

Yves

I would be interested in assisting you on your project. I would ask if you allow me some time as I am implementing BGP and making other major network changes.

e-mail me and we can discuss the specifics.

How often would you be sending out the 20 ICMP packets...every minute...5 minutes?

Thanks,
